Read 2 Corinthians 2:14-17, Psalm 47
Always in Triumph
Thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession.
2 Corinthians 2:14
It seems strange to hear Paul say that he was always being led in "triumphal procession." Later he talks of constant "afflictions" and "hardships," "beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger" (2 Corinthians 6:4-5). Paul recounts the shipwrecks and dangers he faced (11:25-26). When was Paul ever in "triumphal' procession"?
"Always," Paul answers. Always, because God led him in Christ. Always, because Paul did not base triumph, on the happenings in his life but on what God in Christ accomplished through those happenings. Always, because whether Paul preached in the public square or was beaten in prison, God worked in Christ spreading "the fragrance of the knowledge of Him everywhere" (2:14).
In our lives, there can be plenty of afflictions and hardships. When are we ever in "triumphal procession"? "Always," Paul answers. Always, when God leads us in Christ. Always, because triumph is not about us but about God working through us. Always, because God uses us to spread "the fragrance of the knowledge of Him." Always, because God leads us to a triumphal procession that will be eternal and glorious.
Father, thank You for the triumph You work in our lives through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
